![]() Blessed with more red deer than people, this remote isle hosted George Orwell as he finished his dystopian masterpiece, 1984. We were asked to keep away from the bar as locals were using it. Jura, an island in the Inner Hebrides off Scotland’s west coast, is the place to be when you want to get away from the rat race. When we booked in at 2.30 all the venison had been booked. There is definitely not a shortage of deer on Jura. We asked weeks in advance but this wasn’t possible on either evening. We had hoped to have a lobster dinner as part of our 190th celebration. Her infectious smile, boundless energy and determination to help everyone have the best time possible is amazing. The staff are friendly and helpful and genuinely seem to want to want to help. There is so much that is very good about the Jura Hotel: This is currently the only hotel on Jura and they are working hard to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic. Oh and of course I also had one of Harris' exceptional cappuccinos. This was exactly the pub lunch I have been missing for months. I don't think we can underestimate how challenging it must be to do this all, but they never let that show. The dirty fries are a great addition to the menu. It has poor boggy soil and three conical hills known as the Paps of Jura. The portion sizes are perfect - plenty to fill you up, but just enough room for puddings or pints afterwards. Isle of Jura Jura is an island in the Inner Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland.It's 30 miles long by 7 miles wide, with a population of only 196 in 2011. They understandably have to turn tables round so that they can clean and to give as many other customers as possible the chance to get a good meal, but this was done so in a well managed way - we were informed politely ahead of time and were able to move to the outside for a drink after our meal.
